About Nick
Nick Bakay (buh-K-EYE) isn't a real cat, but he played one on TV for seven seasonsas the voice of Salem, the feline familiar with cattitude, on Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. However, such a man's man, can only endure so much female adolescing before reconnecting with his masculine side. For Bakay, that means firing off another opinionated editorial for ESPN.
Second only to Charles Barkley in total sound bites featured in The Quotable ESPN, the all-sport network's resident wit and his signature "Nick Bakay's Tale of the Tape" have been featured on Sportscenter, their over-sized, glossy cousin, ESPN Magazine, NFL Gameday, ESPN's Superbowl and NFL Draft coverage, and ESPN.com.
Hyperion/ESPN books published Nick Bakay's Tale of the Tape, a collection of classic and brand new material.
Nick has guest hosted numerous episodes of Up Close and Talk2, contributed to NFL Countdown, Outside the Lines, College Gameday, Baseball Tonight, NBA 2Nite, ESPN Radio and is a frequent guest on Rome is Burning, as well as The NFL Network
Just Livin' the Dream: Every Wednesday and Thursday morning during the football season, Nick and Robin have become infamous for their segments on Sportscenter.
Nick also pens a weekly column for NFL.com, Nick Bakay's Manly House of Football.
But it all started in New York City. After years of stage work, Bakay's career trajectory unexpectedly shifted after years of theatrical productions, when, despite his training as a dramatic actor, The National Lampoon plopped him on the comedy map by continually featuring his comic creation, The Evil Clown.
Clown fans followed Bakay to Comedy Central's original late night talk show, Night After Night with Allan Havey. There, Bakay created innumerable departments and desk bits, and embodied a recurring cast of cult-adored characters, vulnerable, bitter hand puppets, and lonely, syphilitic vent dolls. The show hasn't aired since 1993 but virtual shrines to Havey and Bakay wash up daily on the shores of the World Wide Web.
Comedy Central was also the home to Bakay's initial foray into sports comedy, Sportsmonster, the first show to take sports humor beyond the bloopers and blunders. He later returned to do a year of sports specials, Offsides, and Baseballapalooza.
Looking for a limber backstop to catch his pop reference knuckle balls, Night After Night fan Dennis Miller poached Nick to be his writer and sidekick when he left SNL for The Dennis Miller Show.
Ten months later, bitter, unshaven and out of work, Bakay unleashed his wrath by writing about professional athletes and the curious decisions of their owners and coaches. His relationship with ESPN began taking shape, as was a writer/performer gig on Fox's sketch comedy show, In Living Color, where he shared an office and a sketch or two with a relative unknown cast member who was gone half the season lensing Ace Ventura, Pet Detective.
While there, Bakay gained notoriety as Stu Dunphy, host of The Dirty Dozens game show, which proved particularly popular with the NFL players, who continually greet him with, "I'll take 'your mamma's so fat' fa'two hundrit, Stu."
A year later, radio rabble-rouser Rush Limbaugh railed on the air for days against "that Bake-ie fellow" who was impersonating his lard-coated rants on ABC's SheTV.
As an actor, Bakay has appeared on numerous network sitcoms, including a recurring role on 'Til Death, The King of Queens,That 70's Show, Murphy Brown, Coach, Grace Under Fire, and Ellen, but the veteran's most mentioned guest appearance is still as Elaine's lover in a particularly distinguished Seinfeld episode called, "The Smelly Car."
Nickelodeon's long-running animated series, The Angry Beavers also stars Bakay as the voice of Norbert, the older wisenbeaver.
Along the way, Nick also added seven seasons as writer/producer on CBS' The King Of Queens, and the three more as a writer/producer and actor on the current FOX show 'Til Death to an already confusing resume.
Nick recently created and voiced a cartoon series for Comedy Central, The Adventures of Baxter & McGuire, which garnered him the highest accolades a buddy comedy about two testicles could ever hope for: An Emmy nomination for best broadband comedy, as well as acceptance at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
Topping off a remarkable year, Nick also teamed up with Kevin James to write the film Paul Blart, Mall Cop, for Columbia Pictures, to be released in January of 2009.
